“He is immortal”,… and he himself revealed the formula of his resurrection.” Pg 72. This was interesting because in real life no one is able to resurrect from the dead. It is magical realism, because people are just going about it as if it is a normal scenario. No one was shocked or no one questioned him as to how he resurrected from the dead, since this is not humanly possible. Aureliano- Aureliano Buendia wants to experience how it feels to sleep with somebody, so he sleeps with Pillar Ternera. He opens up to someone for the first time. He teller of how he loves a young girl called Remedios. He told her of the love he had for her. He even got the guts to go and see her, and ask for her hand in marriage. He is becoming brave and taking risks. Remedios- She was initially very jumpy and feisty, she was also immature. She then became very mature, and she began to hold herself with dignity and composure, something she had never done before. Melquides died, suddenly, after his old age. This time he died forever, and was buried in the garden. Aureliano fell in love with a nine year old. He saw her when he went to visit her family. He was not interested in other girls, he was only interested in her. He desired her so much. When he slept with Pillar Ternera, he confessed to her, his love for the young girl. She understood him and felt sorry for him. Melquides died suddenly because of old age. He went into the river, and was found, stomach devoured by vultures. He was given much respect. Pietro Crispi and Rebeca continued their courting, and Amaranta wanted him all for herself, but was not able to get him, for he loved only Rebeca. "I have found Immortality.” Pg 72. This quote stood out to me because immortality is something we associate with heaven. Here on earth we are only mortal, so the fact that he has found immortality is quite interesting to me. In fact it is quite intriguing. I was puzzled, however, that is part of the magical realism. “You will not be happy as long as your parents remain unburied.”pg 75. This is a foreshadow of Rebeca’s fate I believe. She will never be happy because she was a child who came with problems and issues. A child who brought the insomnia plague to the family, and who ate paint from the walls and dirt from the earth. Isolation is not a good thing in this chapter. I say this because whenever Rebeca was isolated, she would go back to her old ways. Where she would curl up into a ball, and eat white wash and dirt, when she was surrounded by people, she would never do so. So isolation in this case was negative. If Melquides was not by himself that time in the river, his life may have been saved. So in this case as well isolation was not good. The past affected the present and maybe even the future in Rebeca’s case. This is because she had not buried the bones of her parents, a death that had happened several years ago. Even though Melquides was bound to die a peaceful death, the way he died was peculiar. Also how the vultures came to scavenge, showed some sort of wildness in Macando.
